The Order Sons of Italy in America, New Jersey Grand Lodge was chartered in 1911, the second lodge in OSIA. In 1923, the Grand Lodge opened an orphanage in Nutley that functioned until 1970. Mario Pavone was born in Acri, Cosenza (Calabria), and came to the United States in 1954. In Nutley, New Jersey, he joined Nuovo Spirito Lodge #1862 and became active in the Orphans' Home of the New Jersey Grand Lodge. Originally called the Mazzini Orphanage, it was completed in Nutley in 1923.
